Technical project management: The art of steering the whole
What distinguishes a technical project from even the most ambitious project in a home workshop? It is interdisciplinary. It brings together people who are rightly deeply specialised in their own fields.
Technical expertise is indispensable—but it belongs where it creates the greatest value: with the relevant specialists. Project management, meanwhile, ensures that requirements are clear, decisions are made in time, interfaces work, risks remain visible, and many sound individual solutions come together as one functioning whole.
A project manager therefore does not need to answer every technical question personally. What matters more is asking the right questions, recognising dependencies and choosing a method that fits the task: pragmatic for a manageable implementation; structured and robust where there are many stakeholders, high levels of change, or critical approval and safety issues.
The temptation for a project manager to become too deeply immersed in one specialist discipline is entirely human. But giving in to it risks losing sight of the project as a whole. Additional requirements can then become gradual shifts in scope, new participants can trigger unforeseen conflicts, and solvable detailed issues can turn into problems with schedule, budget or quality.
Large technical projects rarely fail because of one specialist question. They usually become critical when objectives remain vague, change is not managed, interfaces are neglected or key stakeholders join the conversation too late. This is where professional project management makes the difference.
For me, technical project management does not mean being the greatest specialist in the room. It means enabling the specialists to achieve their best work together.
